A Raisin in the Sun
The first Broadway play written by an African-American woman, A Raisin in the Sun is a masterpiece that The New York Times credits with changing American theater forever. First produced in 1959 and adapted two years later into a now-classic film starring Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun is as powerful today as it was 50 years ago. Now Harlem Repertory Theatre presents the limited return of this incredible story to their stage — a story that follows the Youngers, an African-American family attempting to move from a crowded two-bedroom apartment into a “white” neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. But a new house is just one of the Youngers’ many dreams. Three generations each yearn for different versions of a better life — whether it’s a business, or a spouse, or the right to live with long-denied dignity.

Mike Clark Trio featuring Vic Juris & Essiet Okon Essiet
Drum virtuoso and jazz musician Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters in the early seventies. His incisive playing on Hancock’s “Actual Proof” garnered him an international cult following and influenced generations of drummers. His versatility led him to a two-year stint with Brand X, the British jazz/rock fusion band founded by Phil Collins. With them he recorded “Do They Hurt?” and “Product.” “He’s a great jazz drummer — and he hasn’t lost any of the stuff that he brought from Oakland. So now he’s totally free to do both, and he does. The solo he played on the album Thrust, on the song “Actual Proof,” is one of the best drum solos on any of my albums. So many people have remarked about that solo, saying, ‘Incredible,’” Herbie Hancock said of his playing. See the Mike Clark Trio play at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown.
