Now Harlem Repertory Theatre presents the limited return of this incredible story to their stage — a story that follows the Youngers, an African-American family attempting to move from a crowded two-bedroom apartment into a “white” neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. But a new house is just one of the Youngers’ many dreams. Three generations each yearn for different versions of a better life — whether it’s a business, or a spouse, or the right to live with long-denied dignity.

Holly Miranda grew up between Detroit and Nashville, two music towns that would influence her own journey in a very profound way. She began playing piano at the age of 6, taught her self guitar at 14 and moved to New York at 16 to start her professional career. For nearly 20 years Holly has been performing, writing and producing with some of the best in the business. She has performed with the likes of Karen O, Lou Reed, The XX and Lesley Gore. She released two records with her band The Jealous Girlfriends and has co-written and produced a mass of other projects. In 2017 Holly released her third solo album on Dangerbird Records titled Mutual Horse. The title of the record comes from an image that was hanging in the control room during the recording sessions. It was of two women and a horse, their arms are draped over each side of the saddle while they gaze into each others eyes. The horse stares bewildered into the cameras lens. The image and its many interpretation would become a theme for the journey this album would take from Los Angeles, California to Portland, Oregon and back to Brooklyn, New York. Along the way Holly with some extremely talented musicians and producers; Josh Werner (Dr. John, Lee Scratch Perry), Jim Kirby Fairchild (Grandaddy, Modest Mouse), Jared Samuel (Yoko Ono), Maria Eisen (System Underground), Matthew Morgan (Built to spill, Modest Mouse).. among others. The eclectic mix of players make for some compelling grooves. This element combined with Miranda’s ability to write catchy melodies and heart wrenchingly honest lyrics make this a record you really want to spend some time with.

All Music Guide writes of Ellis Hooks, who has recorded critically acclaimed albums as a leader for Evidence and Artemis Records, sung with Stax legends Steve Cropper and Little Milton and performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and Italy’s Porretta Soul Festival: “Hooks is the true continuum in the celebrated Southern traditions of soul, blues, and gospel; his voice, while reminiscent of some of the greats, is nonetheless his own, and his phrasing is a trademark. Given the powerful nature of his recordings and his now-storied intensity in concert, Hooks may indeed be the artist who brings these historic traditions back into the musical dialogue and onto the charts in the 21st century.” For this rare, intimate duo show, Bergson and Hooks will be performing music from their critically acclaimed CD/DVD release Live in Normandy along with some new original material.
